Sports drink help

For the past year or year and a half I’ve been riding with a combination of water, Heed, and grape Powerade.   On a ride earlier this week, I finally decided that Heed is just not right for me.  It’s way too sweet and I don’t like to drink it anymore.  I thought I was mixing it too strong, but even after toning it down, it’s still hard to drink for the whole ride.  To be honest, I’ve never been thrilled with the taste (Lemon Lime), but hated throwing it out and wasting the money.

I’ve thought about switching to Ultima, which has zero sugar, but wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on it or other options. I sweat a lot when I ride so I want something to help get the electrolytes back in me while on the road.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Not sure how “good for you” it is..But, I like “Berry” flavor. I’ve been using Propel lately.
Serving size is 1/2 packet in a 16.9 oz container. 10 cals per serving.
    0 fat
    30 mg sodium
    3g carb
    2g Sugar
    Ingredients:
Sucrose, (really? UGH! ok, maybe I’ll look at something else), citric acid, sodium cirtate….yada yada yada…

I guess, for what its worth…

I do like it, I guess I’m gonna head to whole foods (paycheck) and see if I can find something there.

  2. anything under 2 hours, I just drink water. maybe eat a gel or 2, depending on the effort level involved. are you sure you need to add a mix to you drinks?

might want to read up on heed vs other sports drinks. hammernutrition has some good info on their website about how your body metabolizes different kinds of carbs.

  3. I am a really big fan of Accelerade. I have enjoyed the drink so much on long bike rides and runs, that I have stocked up on their gels for races. All of the drink flavors I have tried have been awesome and the kiwi-strawberry gels are great! My local bike shop carries accelerade, but I have also found it at GNC and performancebike.com usually has a pretty good deal on it.

    Hope this helps!!
